Introduction
I used to wait for permission.
Permission to travel. Permission to start a blog. Permission to believe that someone like me — with my background, my bank account, my doubts — could explore Africa and help others do the same.
I waited for a sign. For the right moment. For someone to tap me on the shoulder and say: "You're ready now."
But that moment never came.
And I'm writing this because I know I'm not alone. I know there's someone reading this who is waiting too.
Waiting for permission. Waiting for a sign. Waiting for someone to tell them they're allowed to dream.
So let me be the one to say it:
You don't need permission. You never did.
The Permission Trap
We live in a world that tells us we need approval.
We need a degree to be qualified.
We need money to be worthy.
We need experience to be taken seriously.
We need someone else to believe in us before we believe in ourselves.
This is the permission trap. And it keeps us stuck.
Because here's the truth: the people you admire — the travellers, the creators, the entrepreneurs — they didn't wait for permission either.
They decided. They started. They figured it out along the way.
And so can you.
What Waiting Costs You
Every day you wait for permission, you pay a price.
Not in money. In something more valuable: time.
Time you could have spent learning.
Time you could have spent saving.
Time you could have spent building.
Time you could have spent living.
I'm not saying this to make you feel bad. I'm saying it because I've been there. I've wasted time waiting for a moment that never came.
And I don't want that for you.
How to Give Yourself Permission
Not in money. In something more valuable: time.
Time you could have spent learning.
Time you could have spent saving.
Time you could have spent building.
Time you could have spent living.
I'm not saying this to make you feel bad. I'm saying it because I've been there. I've wasted time waiting for a moment that never came.
And I don't want that for you.
How to Give Yourself Permission
Here's what I've learned:
1. Start before you're ready.
You will never feel 100% ready. The fear doesn't disappear. You just learn to move despite it.
2. Take one small step.
You don't need to have it all figured out. Just take one step. Open the savings account. Write the first sentence. Book the appointment. Send the message.
3. Surround yourself with believers.
Find people who cheer you on. Join communities where dreams are celebrated, not mocked. Follow pages that inspire you (you're already here, so that's a good start 😉).
4. Give yourself grace.
You will make mistakes. You will have setbacks. You will doubt yourself. That's normal. Give yourself grace to be human.
A Letter to You
If you're reading this, I want you to know something:
You are allowed.
You are allowed to dream of places you've never been.
You are allowed to want more for your life.
You are allowed to start something new, even if no one else understands.
You are allowed to begin.
You don't need anyone's permission. Not your family's. Not your friends'. Not societies.
Just yours.
So, here's my question: What are you waiting for?
Let's Keep Going
Thank you for reading this far. Thank you for being here. Thank you for dreaming.
I'm on this journey too. Still learning. Still growing. Still giving myself permission every day to take the next step.
And I'm glad you're here with me.
