What The Lion's Whisker Taught Me About Visa Applications

Introduction

Last week, I shared the story of Anansi the Spider — and how his tale teaches us about the wisdom of sharing knowledge on our travels.

Today, we're going to Ethiopia.

This is a story that has been told for generations — a story about a woman, a lion, and a seemingly impossible task. It's a story about patience. About gentleness. About the quiet power of persistence.

And it has everything to do with your next visa application.

Let me tell you the tale.

The Tale of The Lion's Whisker

Long ago, in the highlands of Ethiopia, there lived a young woman named Askale.

Askale had recently married a widower with a young son. She wanted nothing more than to be a good mother to the boy. But the child was distant, angry, and unwilling to accept her.

Askale went to the village elder for advice.

The elder listened carefully, then said: "To win the child's trust, you must bring me a whisker from a living lion."

Askale was stunned. A lion's whisker? That was impossible. Lions were fierce, dangerous, and deadly.

But she was determined. So she went into the forest.

The first night, she hid behind a tree and watched the lion from a distance. She was terrified. She didn't move.

The second night, she came closer. She left a piece of meat where the lion could find it. The lion ate it and left.

The third night, she came closer still. She left more meat. The lion ate it, watching her carefully.

Night after night, she returned. She brought food. She spoke softly. She sat quietly, letting the lion get used to her presence.

Weeks passed. Months passed.

Then one night, the lion approached her. He sniffed her hand. He allowed her to touch his mane.

And gently, carefully, she reached up and plucked a single whisker from his chin.

She returned to the elder and handed him the whisker.

The elder smiled and said: "You have done what seemed impossible. You have tamed a lion with patience, gentleness, and persistence. Now, use those same qualities with the child. Be patient. Be gentle. Be persistent. And his trust will come."

And so, she did. And in time, the child came to love her as his mother.

The Lesson

Askale learned something powerful:

Great things are not achieved through force. They are achieved through patience, preparation, and persistence.

She didn't rush. She didn't force. She didn't give up.

She showed up every day. She built trust slowly. And in the end, she achieved what seemed impossible.

The Travel Tip

Now, let's talk about visa applications.

If you've ever applied for a visa, you know the feeling. The paperwork. The waiting. The uncertainty. The fear of rejection.

And sometimes, it feels like trying to tame a lion. Impossible.

But here's what Askale teaches us:

Patience, preparation, and persistence will get you further than rushing.

✅ Start early. Don't wait until the last minute. Give yourself time to gather documents, save money, and prepare your application.

✅ Be thorough. Check every document. Match every name. Follow every instruction. The details matter.

✅ Don't rush the process. Rushing leads to mistakes. Mistakes lead to rejection. Take your time.

✅ Be persistent. If you get rejected, don't give up. Learn from your mistakes. Reapply.

✅ Be patient. The process takes time. But every step forward is progress.

You don't need to force your way through. You just need to show up, prepare well, and keep going.

What This Means for You

If you're preparing for a visa application — or any travel goal that feels overwhelming — remember Askale.

She didn't try to tame the lion in one day. She showed up. Again, and again. Slowly, patiently, persistently.

And in the end, she succeeded.

You will too. Just don't give up.
